Teaching Assistant with Richmond EAL Friendship Group
Group established in January 2001 for the benefit of new to English parents of pupils in Richmond schools. Open door policy / EAL tuition / advice on careers, childcare, education, health. Very informal.
Richmond EAL Friendship Group is a registered charity providing free informal English classes to people living in the borough of Richmond for whom English is an additional language. On Thursday mornings in school term time (from 10am to 12 noon) Richmond EAL Friendship Group run a Healthy Cooking Club at which EAL learners can share favourite recipes from different countries and learn English at the same time. They also have access to several laptop computers, so learners also have the opportunity to acquire or improve computer skills. Richmond EAL Friendship Group are looking for a volunteer to assist their director with running the Thursday-morning group. Duties will include acting as scribe, supporting individual learners, supervising food preparation, and setting up and clearing away.
Skills and Qualifications Required
Good communication skills, reliability and resourcefulness, as well as open-mindedness – ideally the volunteer should be genuinely interested in other languages and cultures.
The volunteer will gain valuable experience of teaching English as an additional language to hard-to-reach members of the community, and will benefit from being exposed to an enormous variety of cultural backgrounds – the learners speak 51 different languages! The work of our charity genuinely transforms people’s lives, helping them to integrate and participate fully in society, which makes this role particularly satisfying for the volunteer.
